Brace, John Pierce, 1793-1872
Biography
John Pierce Brace was born 10 Feb. 1793 in Litchfield, Conn., son of Susan (Pierce) and James Brace. He graduated from Williams College in 1812. In 1814 he became head teacher for his aunt Sarah Pierce at her Litchfield Female Academy, and later served as associate principal and principal. From 1832 to 1847 he was head of the Hartford (Conn.) Female Seminary, founded by former Litchfield Female Academy Student Catharine Beecher. He served as editor of the Hartford Courant from 1849 to 1863. John Pierce Brace wrote 2 novels, Tales of the Devils (1847) and The Fawn of the Pale Faces (1853); scientific articles; and poems for the school. He died in Litchfield on 18 Oct. 1872.
