With thank you note and gift, Dorothy Bull initiated a decade-and-a-half correspondence with John Masefield in March 1916. Masefield replied. He then wrote Bull fifteen more times that year, responding to her various questions; noting his wartime travels; and reporting on his efforts to distribute the funds Bull donated to wounded French veterans in need of artificial limbs.

John Masefield replied or wrote to Dorothy Bull eighteen times in 1917. He wrote twice from London, wrapping up the business of Bull's gift to wounded French veterans, and seven times from France while conducting unpaid battlefield research along the Somme and, finally, nine times from his new family home on Boar's Hill near Oxford, UK.
