Biography
Daniel Sheldon Jr. was born in Washington, Conn., the son of Charlotte Judson Sheldon (?-1784) and Dr. Daniel Sheldon (1750-1840). Sheldon attended the Litchfield Law School in 1796. Upon completion, he went to the United States Dept. of Treasury with Oliver Wolcott, and was auditor when Washington was burned in 1814. In 1816, Sheldon went to Paris with Albert Gallatin. Sheldon was commissioned Secretary of Legation, April 3, 1816 and acted as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim from July 18 to October 6, 1817; from August 12 to October 27, 1818; and from May 10,1823, to March 30, 1824. Sheldon contracted a respiratory disease and died in Marseilles on Apr. 14, 1828, 48 years old. He did not marry.

The Sheldon family papers primarily relate to Daniel Sheldon (1726-1772) and Lucretia Gross Sheldon (1724-1772), their son Dr. Daniel Sheldon (1750-1840), their grandchildren Daniel Sheldon Jr. (1780-1828), Lucy Sheldon Beach (1788-1889), Henry Sheldon (1790-1868?) and William Sheldon (1802-1826), and their great grandson Frederick Sheldon (1827-1907).
