Biography

Charles Comfort Tiffany was born in Baltimore in 1829, a son of Comfort Tiffany and Laura Burr Tiffany. He received his education at Dickinson College, the Andover Theological Seminary and in the Universities of Halle, Heidelberg, and Berlin. During the last year of the Civil War he was Chaplain of the Sixth Connecticut Regiment, U. S. Volunteers. He was ordained Episcopal minister in 1866; was rector of St. James', Fordham, 1867-1871; assistant on the Green Foundation, Trinity Church, Boston, 1871-1874; rector, Church of the Atonement, New York, 1874-1880; rector of Zion Church, 1880-1890, and Archdeacon of the diocese of New York from 1893 until 1902. Tiffany was the author of articles and books on religious topics. While rector of Zion Church, New York, he married Julia Henrietta Wheeler, eldest daughter of Nelson Knox Wheeler and Emily Butler Ogden Wheeler. After marriage they spent their winters in New York City and the summers at their residence in Sharon, Conn. He died at North East Harbor, Me., in 1907.
