Biography

Henry Bennett Graves was born in Sherman, Conn. His father, Jedediah Graves, was a representative from Sherman, a judge of the county court, and a member of the constitutional convention of 1818. Henry Graves studied law with the James C. Loomis of Bridgeport and was admitted to the bar at Litchfield in April, 1845. He began practice the same year in Plymouth. In 1849, he returned to Litchfield, where he resided for the remainder of his life. In addition to his successful practice, he was the executive secretary to Gov. Henry Dutton and clerk of the County Court. He represented the town of Litchfield in the General Assembly in 1858, 1867-1868, 1876, 1877, 1879, and 1889. He was twice married, first to Mary Dutton, daughter of Gov. Dutton; and second, to Sarah Smith of Morris.
