Scope and Contents
One 2½" x 4" photo of Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence. Caption reads, "A Redeemed Slave Child, 5 years of age. Redeemed in Virgina, by Catharine S. Lawrence; baptized in Brooklyn, at Plymouth Church, by Henry Ward Beecher, May, 1863. The folder also containes a newspaper clipping detailing the events about "The Freedom Ring" and "Little Pinky". "In February, 1860, the colored child of a white father, was sold at auction by Henry Ward Beecher to prevent her being sold in the Far South by her owner. Rain never fell faster than the tears of the congregation, and the price of the child was paid many times over. Into the basket of payments Rose Terry Cooke threw a valuable ring and Mr. Beecher placed this on the child's finger, saying, 'With this ring I do wed thee to Freedom.'"
