Blotter, unnumbered, 1796-05-18 - 1796-08-15
Item 2
Scope and Contents
This volume begins New Milford 31 August 1795. As in earlier accounts, Boardman lists African American customers by noting their first name followed by "Negro." "Frank Negro" makes a purchase, and "Jethro Negro" makes purchases and is given credits for work. There is also a notation of flour sent in Boardman's wagon to New Haven by "Sam Negro" in July of 1796. This volume includes a woman, "Beth Negro," who is given a credit for the washing.
Artist Ralph Earl is listed several times in this volume. His purchases included vermillion as well as snuff, gin, paper, handkerchiefs, button molds, calico, stockings, string beads, thread, and tape.
Of particular note are the entries for trade with Litchfield businesses. Paper makers Stone and Deming, nails from Bradley's foundary, and goods traded between Boardman's partnership with Moses Seymour (Boardman and Seymour) and his New Milford store. Several of these are made at the end of the book, out of date order.
