Scope and Contents
The beginning of this volume lists more information about workers and pay than in previous volumes. Entries on 19 April 1798 list payment or credit to Cato Negro (for “powdering up” plaster of Paris); John Ferris, Augustin Thair (for carding hay and dung), and Montgomery Sherwood. Cato Negro is listed several other times, purchasing pomatum, black ball, snuff, and raisins.
Other African Americans listed include:
Jethro Negro, 30 May 1798 for one glass of brandy; 14 June 1798 for 1 pint rum and a lent bottle; and 11 July 1798 purchasing rum.
Cyrus Negro, 22 Sept 1798 for 9 quarts of molasses.
The volume also contains details of travels to the Western Reserve in modern Ohio. It lists the shareholders in the land company and deetails of charges to them including food, livestock, textiles, tools, paper, medicine and a map. The New Milford Land Company is given as including Elijah Boardman, Homer Boardman, David Sherman Boardman, Jonathan Giddings, Zepheniah Briggs, Stanley Griswold, Frederick Wolcott, Elijah Wadsworth, and William Eli, "owners of Township No. 1 in 2nd Range and Township No. 2 in 6 range and the other lands pertaining thereunto for the New Milford Land Company and Elijah Boardman their agent." It goes on to note that charges will be made to the company and paid proportionally by the shareholders.
Another item of interest is a charge to the town on 24 Sept 1798 for a shift and handkerchief for a dead girl.
