5 letters, in the first letter Winthrop tells of his desire for the family to write him letters and talks about mills, buying paper there, and information about friends. In the second letter, Winthrop talks about letters that he has received and his journey to school. In the third letter, Winthrop tells his mother he has arrived safely at school. In the fourth letter, Winthrop discusses news of the second Connecticut Heavy Artillery, news about school, and expresses his desire to buy a gold pen. In the fifth letter Winthrop talks about the journey to visit his father and his carpet bag being stolen.
