Scope and Contents
4 letters, in the first letter Winthrop H. talks about coming home, his not being able to visit Detroit, and a family he meets who have children the with the same name as his. In the second letter, Winthrop H. discusses his duties within the regiment and what daily life is like, and going to Gen. Lee’s former home which became an army headquarters. He also talks about the surrounding land being confiscated by the Union and the horses in the regiment. In the third letter, Winthrop H. describes a stomach illness he contracted, describes the tent he is living in, how the other soldiers like him, a prayer meeting they had, and the state of the war. In the fourth letter, Winthrop H. describes the weather, the surroundings, and the inside of his tent in detail. He also talks about getting soldiers to take a temperance pact, the drills they do with cannons, describes the duties of a field officer, and how a soldier died in the extreme heat. He also suggests to his children to become closer to God, pray more, and to behave for their mother.
