2 letters, in the first letter Winthrop talks about the food he is eating, the weather, how he is not afraid to sleep alone in his tent, about working on a map, and money matters. In the second letter, Winthrop talks about the money he sent, buying a horse from a local Virginian, and the capturing of a Confederate soldier. He also wrote about preaching on the Sabbath, burying a soldier, and being postmaster.
