In the second letter, he talks about how much he misses Lucy and wants a letter from her, Confederate deserters, and soldiers in the hospital. In the third letter, Winthrop tells about a sermon which he sent into a religious magazine and how he longs to see Lucy. He also responds to hearing about the children going ice skating and becoming more Christian.
