4 letters, in the first letter Winthrop talks about how much he wants to see Lucy and wants to go home, sending money home for soldiers, and looking for Winthrop E.’s lost carpet bag. In the second letter, he talks about things going on in camp, food he eats, his health, his love and relationship with his wife, and money matters. In the third letter, Winthrop tells Lucy that the order has come that will allow him to go home. In the fourth letter Winthrop discusses the weather, Winthrop E. using the horse improperly, and instructions for Lucy at home.
