Scope and Contents
This volume is not bound in leather and has no cover. The volume contains entries similar to the other blotters for rum and other spirits, agricultural products, fabric, and household goods. The first entry is dated 27 August 1811.
There are numerous entries for washing machines, both purchases and sales. An entry from 31 Dec 1811 lists "6 wash machines per E Bennett to sell or return John Steel Cr."
Entries for laborers include thrasing corn, white washing house, sowing grass seed, plowing, cutting stalks, mowing, digging potatoes, making cider, gathering pumpkins, picking corn, picking apples, working on highway, killing sheep, shoveling dung, shoveling snow, making mortar, chopping wood, sledding wood, driving team, cutting ice, and bridge work. Workers included John Prout, Phillip Phillips, Ezra Drake, Augustine Thayer, Cyrus Taylor, Lemuel Thayer, and James Shannon.
In addition, some labor was noted as having been performed in the house including shoe making and spinning wool.
There are also numerous entries for goods shipped to and returned from Black Rock, which is a part of Bridgeport near the coast. The goods sent included cheese, butter, and pork. Salt and plaster were the items returned most frequently. This volume includes several entries for the merchants King and Weed, who advertised regular market boats sailing to New York.
There are several entries involving African Americans in this volume. One, on 31 August 1811, notes that Charles Taylor Negro is charged with the "Use of Virginia Mare to Camp Meeting in York State Say about 25 miles." Another of 13 October 1811 notes a charge to Cyrus Thatcher "to pay black girl in goods pr your verbal order" Homer Boardman is charged on 18 October 1811 paying your order blk woman."
The last few pages contain an account of pork put up by Philp and Jeruel. The final entry is dated 4 March 1812.
