Folder 2
Scope and Contents
The Clarence H. Elliott collection documents Elliott's association with Litchfield High School from 1916 through 1927 as teacher, assistant principal, principal, and athletic coach. There are also items which relate to Litchfield in general and Antrim, N.H., where Elliott lived for a time prior to coming to Litchfield. The collection consists of photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, and news clippings. Many of the items are photographs are of the Litchfield High School girls and boys athletic teams that Elliott coached, particularly baseball and basketball. Other photographs are of school plays, candids of students, and class portraits. There are some non-high school photographs relating to Bantam Lake, Shepherd Knapp Camp, Litchfield following a 1927 blizzard, local people, and scenes in and around Antrim, N.H. The collection contains graduation and school drama programs, athletic and prom tickets, and other printed materials. News clippings relate to high school activities and school sports. In 1927, the Litchfield School Board did not renew Elliott's contract, citing what they believed were professional deficiencies. Elliott and many residents of Litchfield disagreed and argued that he was a competent principal. The job of high school principal was added to the responsibilities of the superintendent of schools. The collection contains several news clippings that relate to the controversy.
