Biographical or Historical Information

William H. Scovill (1796-1854), who owned a firm known by several names including The Scovill Manufacturing Co. with his brother James Mitchel Lamson Scovill (1789-1857), was a prominent businessman in Waterbury, Conn. His wife Eunice Ruth Davies (1807-1839) descended from John Davies (1680-1758), who settled in Litchfield in 1735 in an area that came to be known as Davies Hollow. It became part of Washington, Conn., when that town was incorporated in 1779. William Scovill and Eunice Davies Scovill had seven children, including Alathea Ruth Scovill (1828-1899), who married Frederick J. Kingsbury (1823-1910) of Waterbury and Litchfield. Eunice Davies Scovill's sister Belvidere Davies (1804-1870) married George Ranney of Ogdensburg, N.Y.
