Biographical / Historical
The Litchfield Historical Society was founded in 1856 and began collecting in earnest in the 1890s. Early in its history, volunteers removed photographs from other papers they were donated with and stored them in vertical files by type of photograph- portraits, buildings, etc. The Society ended this practice in the early 2000s.

Abstract
The Litchfield Historical Society photograph collection is an artifical collection brought together by staff that contains photographs that primarily were part of the vertical files collection. They are arranged into three series by format: Series 1. Prints; Series 2. Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes; and Series 3. Glass plates. The content of the prints and glass plates are categorized in this finding aid by subject; the physical objects are arranged by accession.
Custodial History
In its early days of collecting, the Historical Society stored and catalogued photographs separately from other materials. Any collections of papers or artifacts that may have been donated at the same time were not kept together. Photographs are also found in a number of manuscript collections as it is no longer common practice to separate them from collections of papers. Additions are no longer made to this collection.
Method of Acquisition
This collection was assembled by the Litchfield Historical Society from a variety of donations. Donor and acquisitions information varies from one photo to the next. Please contact staff if you wish to know additional acquisition details about specific items.
