Biographical / Historical
Margery Boyd (1906-1992) was born in New York, NY and moved to Litchfield, CT with her family. She volunteered with many civic organizations, including the Litchfield Chapter, American Red Cross; Charlotte Hungerford Hospital; Litchfield Historical Society; Litchfield civil defense committee; Litchfield Hills Audubon Society; Wykeham Rise School; and others.
Her service with the Litchfield Chapter, American Red Cross is particularly remarkable. She served it all of her adult life, longer than any other member in its history. She started in 1927 as a canvasser on horseback. In 1990, 63 years later she was still running the Motor Service, which she had started in 1942. Meanwhile, she held virtually every position in the chapter, including three periods as chapter chair. She received the Connecticut Red Cross Volunteer Recognition Award and the Clara Barton Medal, the highest award to a volunteer.
