Biographical / Historical
James Averell was born in Ashford, Conn where he lived in his youth, moving to Palmer, MA, and Wilmington, VT, before he settled in Cooperstown, NY in 1787. He served in the Continental Army from Palmer, MA. In 1792, he exchanged his initial Cooperstown property for a tannery. He and his son William Holt Averell invested in land in Cleveland, OH. He died away from home at St. Johnsville, NY in 1835.
