Scope and Contents
The Alonzo N. Lewis scrapbook (1961-39-0) contains newspaper clippings from the year 1852 through 1855. The small album contains thirty-two pages of newspaper clippings from the Litchfield Republican, Litchfield Enquirer, and The Tribune. The majority of the clippings are composed of verses, sermons, essay and editorials, and a composition titled "Masonic Ode." A contents list is handwritten in at the back of the scrapbook which lists out the articles included in the scrapbook. The item is currently housed in 3A Box 21.

Biographical or Historical Information
Alonzo Norton Lewis was born in New Britain, Connecticut on September 3, 1831. He was educated in public and private schools and was graduated from Yale University in 1852. He was principal of Litchfield Academy and New Hartford High School. He taught in the North Carolina Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind. He was also principal and superintendent of schools at Waterbury, Connecticut, and principal of Parker Academy. He was admitted to the bar in 1857. In 1866 he was ordained an Episcopal clergyman and was rector of Christ Church, Bethlehem; Church of the Messiah, Dexter, Main; St. James’ Church, New Haven, Connecticut; Holy Trinity Church, Westport; and Christ Church, Montpelier, Vermont. He died September 12, 1807.
