Biographical or Historical Information
Rev. William J. Brewster was born in 1858 in New Haven, Connecticut. He was one of four sons born to Rev. Joseph Brewster and Sarah Bunce Brewster; three of which followed in their father’s footsteps and entered into the Episcopal ministry.
In 1881 William J. Brewster graduated from Yale. He then relocated to the Dakota Territory to teach, and in 1885 was married to Emma Colby. The couple had three children born to them in the Dakota Territory before moving back to William's home state. After returning to Connecticut the couple had two more children.
In 1897 Brewster was ordained a deacon in his first parish at Northford, Connecticut. In 1899 he accepted a call to St. John’s Church in Warehouse Point. From 1916 to 1933 he was rector of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Litchfield. He continued as rector emeritus after resigning as rector in 1935. Rev. Brewster passed away at the age of 93 on March 31, 1952.
