Scope and Contents
The Dr. Burritt North Birge log book copy (1972-131-0) is a typewritten copy of the log kept by B.N. Birge, Surgeon's Steward of U.S. Gunboat Penobscot from October 19, 1863 to October 19, 1864. The copy was edited by E.C. Birge, Dr. Roy Bird Cook, and Margaret W. Kieffer.

Biographical or Historical Information
Burritt North Birge was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, December 22, 1841 to Chester G. and Mary North Birge. He attended common school and Wolcott Academy, and also took a Course of Lectures at New York Medical College. On September 10, 1862 Burritt enlisted in the 22nd Connecticut Regiment Volunteer Infantry, Company F in New Britain. He was mustered out on September 2, 1863. After being mustered out be re-enlisted in the Naval Service and remained in duty until the close of the war. Dr. Birge died December 26, 1900 in Jersey City, New Jersey, and is buried in the Birge family plot at Fairview Cemetery, New Britain, Connecticut.
