2010-376-0
Scope and Contents
The Whitney L. Brooks collection of Lyman family papers relates to the land holdings of Moses Lyman (1714-1768) of Goshen, Conn., his son Moses Lyman (1743-1768), and his grandsons Moses Lyman (1768-1844), Samuel Lyman (1770-1842), and Erastus Lyman (1773-1855). The papers consist of legal records, deeds, leases, surveys, and survey maps. Moses Lyman (1714-1768) was one of the original settlers of Goshen, Conn. In 1739 he was named treasurer and continued to hold public offices. He married Sarah Hayden ( 1716-1808). Among their children was Moses Lyman (1743-1768), sometimes referred to as "Moses Lyman Jr." in the papers. He was a farmer living on the property of his father and held numerous town offices, including first selectman. He was married to Ruth Collins (1745-1775) in 1767 and they had four children: Moses Lyman Jr., Dr. Daniel Lyman (1769-1795), Samuel Lyman, and Erastus Lyman. After the death of Ruth Collins Lyman, Moses married Mary Buell Judd (1763-1835). They had two children, Mary Lyman Collins (1787-1879) and Darius Lyman (1789-1865). Darius studied at the Litchfield Law School and eventually settled in Ohio. Among the highlights of this collection is a Western Reserve survey map showing lots of land in township no. 8 9th range of New Connecticut, now present-day Chester, Ohio.
