Elihu Harrison papers
1953-02-0
Scope and Contents
The papers of Elihu Harrison (1797-1855) consist primarily of his business papers including bills, accounts, receipts, and orders. Elihu Harrison was a storekeeper and business man in Litchfield, first in the South Farms section (now the town of Morris) and later, about 1825, in the center of Litchfield. From the goods he purchased from wholesale merchants in New Haven and New York, it is evident that he ran a general store, selling a variety of dry goods, hardware, and groceries. The business continued in Litchfield until 1836. Elihu Harrison was born in the South Farms section of Litchfield in 1797 and died in Stamford in 1855. He was active in town government and organizations, including serving as Town Clerk from 1826-1836, State Representative in 1832 and 1835, a Justice of the Peace, and secretary fo the Litchfield Female Academy from 1835-1836, and served as a Director of the Phoenix Branch Bank and Litchfield Mutual Fire Insurance Co. The Harrisons were early settlers in South Farms. Elihu's grandfather, also Elihu who died in 1806, ran a tavern in what is now East Morris. Daniel (1770-1811), son of the first Elihu, and Abigail (Goodwin) Harrison were Elihu's parents.
