Philip Parley Hubbard (1859-1945) of Litchfield, Conn., was the son of John Henry Hubbard and Abby Wells Hubbard and traced his ancestry to John Hubbard, who lived in Boston in 1670 and served as a captain in King Philip's War. John Henry Hubbard was a prominent lawyer in Litchfield and served in Congress during the Civil War years 1863-1865. Two brothers and one sister of Philip were born in Litchfield: attorney John Tomlinson Hubbard (1856-1937), attorney Frank Wells Hubbard (1865-1926); and Anna Electa Hubbard (1859-1909). Philip P. Hubbard was born on June 9, 1859. He attended the local schools and graduated from Yale College in 1885. His first employment, for a brief period, was in the coal, iron, and hardware business at Roxbury Station, Conn. From there he went to Brewster, N.Y. as bookkeeper for the First National Bank of that town. In 1890 he returned to Litchfield to become treasurer of the Shepaug, Litchfield and Northern Railroad. During this period he was clerk of the Borough of Litchfield. He became associated with the First National Bank of Litchfield in 1899, rose to the position of cashier, and in 1933 was elected president of the bank, a post he held until his retirement in 1937. For a number of years he was treasurer of both Litchfield County and town. Always keenly interested in the success and problems of the farmer, Mr. Hubbard was one of the members of the Men's Forum, who, in 1914, became interested in organizing the Litchfield County Farm Bureau. At a meeting that year he was made secretary of a committee to present a plan of organization. When the Bureau was organized on Feb. 12, 1915, he was elected treasurer and held that office until 1923 and then became assistant treasurer when the office was transferred to Torrington. In 1931 the office was moved back to Litchfield and Mr. Hubbard was again elected treasurer, a post he held at the time of his death. Mr. Hubbard was married in Litchfield on May 9, 1896 to Harriet A. Cooke, daughter of Charles M. Cooke, Lowell, Mass., manufacturer, and of Augusta Walker Cooke. Philip and Harriet Hubbard had two daughters, Miriam Hubbard of New York and Harriet Hubbard (Mrs. George) Sparr of Litchfield and Hartford. (excerpted from The Litchfield Enquirer, Apr. 12, 1945)
