Tyrolea Music Book
00-2011-79-0
Scope and Contents
The Tyrolea Music Book (2011-79-0) is a collection of music. Inside the front cover is a watercolor with a banner with the word, “Tyrolea.” Tyrolea is the name of a club that existed at Yale; founded in 1854 and lasted for about five years. Because of the anonymous nature of this item it is difficult to claim if the book was actually produced for the club. Tyrolea is probably a reference to Tyrol; a region in Europe around Austria. Tyrolean, for example, is used to describe a hat also known as a Bavarian hat. Some songs that can be found in the book are Gioachino Rossini’s “Mose in Egitto” (Moses in Egypt), Mozart’s “Military Waltz,” and “Polka No. 2.” In Mose in Egitto the part is noted as 1st flute, and flute was an instrument used in the Tyrolea club, but this is the only notation of the instrument that the book might be for.
