Biographical or Historical Information
In 1888, following two devastating fires that destroyed much of Litchfield's business district, Henry Wessells & William Gates opened a drugstore at the corner of South and West Streets. By 1899, Wessells & Gates had been replaced by Aaron Crutch's drugstore. In 1919, Crutch took on William Marley as a partner, and the business became known as Crutch & Marley. In 1942, one of Crutch's relations, Archie MacDonald, established Crutch & MacDonald. Robert Doyle bought the business in 1961. Crutch & MacDonald closed in 1994 after Doyle reached a business agreement with Rite-Aid.
