Biographical or Historical Information

Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of Russia was born in St. Petersburg on January 14, 1850. He was the sixth child and fourth son of Alexander II of Russia and his wife Maria Alexandrovna. Alexei began his military training at the age of seven, and by the age of twenty he had been appointed lieutenant of the Russian Imperial Navy and had visited all European military ports of Russia. In 1871 he was sent as a goodwill ambassador to the United States and Japan. In 1883 he was appointed general admiral of the Russian navy. As admiral he had a significant impact in the navy’s equipment with new ships and in modernizing their naval ports. In 1905, after defeat in the Battle of Tsushimia he was relieved of his command. He died three year later in Paris on November 14, 1908. After the official visit to St. Petersburg of an American squadron under the commands of Admiral David Farragut in 1867, it was decided that a high level visit of the Russian Navy to the United States should be undertaken. After lengthy negotiations, it was decided that the Russian delegation would be headed by Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich. The Russian squadron anchored in New York harbor on November 21, 1871, where the Grand Duke was greeted by general John Adams Dix. A military parade took place, and the Duke then attended a thanksgiving service at the Russian chapel. During the remainder of 1871 the Duke toured the United States and made stops in Washington, the Midwest, and South, and even participated in a Buffalo hunt. During his United States travels he spent December 7 through December 14 in Boston Massachusetts where he stayed at the Paul Revere House. He was welcomed at the City Hall and the State House upon his arrival. During his stay in Boston the Grand Duke visited Harvard University as well as different public schools in the Boston area, as well as the battlefield of Bunker Hill and the shipyard of Charlestown, Massachusetts. Upon departing the United States from Pensacola, Florida on February 22, 1872, the Russian squadron made its way to Japan where the Grand Duke began a goodwill tour as well before returning to his home country.
