Scope and Contents
The Mary Brisbane Hollister scrapbook (1965-25-0) was complied by Mary Brisbane Hollister from 1840 - 1903. An inscription reading "Ms. M.S. Brisabne from her cousin Alex, New York 30th Oct., 1840" is in the front page, along with a hand sketch of Alex. The scrapbook mainly contains newspaper clippings from such newspapers as the Litchfield Enquirer, The Christian Union, The Congregationalist, and The Connecticut Courant. Many of the clipped articles were written by Mary Brisbane Hollister or her husband Gideon Hollister. Also in the scrapbook are hand handwritten versus, as well as pressed algae, and a Haitian monetary note. The item is currently housed in 3A Box 5a.

Biographical or Historical Information
Mary Brisbane Hollister was born June 11, 1828 to John Wilson Brisbane and Mary Gillon Brisbane of South Carolina. On June 3, 1848 she was married to Gideon H. Hollister in Litchfield, Connecticut. Gideon was a prominent lawyer, State Senator, United State Minister to Haiti, author and historian. During their marriage the couple had four children; only one of which survived into adulthood. Mary Brisbane Hollister passed away in 1914.
