Biography

Rufus Cole Stillman was born 1921 Feb 28 to Edgar and Katherine Chase Stillman. Following graduation from Taft School he attended Yale until joining the Army. He married Leslie Caesar on Nov. 23, 1942.

Following the war the Stillmans settled in Litchfield, Conn., where he worked briefly as editor of the Litchfield Enquirer prior to joining the Torin Manufacturing Co.. He started work there on the plant floor and would go on to the roles of vice president of labor relations; president and chief executive officer; and chairman of the board.

Stillman served the community as a selectman and member of many boards, contributing to the library, schools, hospital, historical society, and as president of the Junior Republic. The Stillmans are credited with bringing Modern Architecture to Litchfield, beginning with the first of three homes they commissioned from Marcel Breuer.
