Biography

James Averell, Jr. was born in Ashford, Conn where he lived in his youth, moving to Palmer, Mass., and Wilmington, Vt., before he settled in Cooperstown, N. Y in 1787. He served in the Continental Army from Palmer, MA. In 1792 he exchanged his initial Cooperstown property for a tannery He and his son William Holt Averell invested in land in Cleveland, OH. He died away from home at St. Johnsville NY in 1835. He is sometimes referred to as James Averell, II.
