Sheldon, Frederick, 1827-1907
Frederick Sheldon was the son of Mary Sebor Sheldon (1798-1850) and Frederick Sheldon (1785-1859). He was a member of the Harvard class of 1842 and lived in New York City and Newport, R.I. His Nov. 23, 1907 New York Times obituary noted that he was "a man of literary attainments and a great reader of books." He was a member of the New York Yacht Club in Newport; the Union, Knickerbocker, and Century Clubs in New York; and an officer in various capacities of the New York Society Library. In 1857, he married Amey Richmond Fearing Sheldon (1834-1908), daughter of Harriet Richmond Fearing and David Fearing. Frederick and Amey Fearing Sheldon had no children. She died after her husband and left in her will over $300,000 to Harvard for the benefit of the library and to establish the Frederick Sheldon Traveling Fellowships.
