Biography

Hans Cristoph Seherr-Thoss was born in Dobrau, Silesia. He was the son of the Count and Countess Herrman Christoph Seherr-Thoss. His mother, Muriel White, was the daughter of Henry White, one time United States Ambassaador to France. He later became a United States citizen and served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Sonia Phipps Farrell in 1948. Both had children from previous marriages. Also in 1948, the Seherr-Thosses purchased property in Litchfield, Conn. They established Butternut Brook Jerseys, a dairy farm, in 1956, which they ran until 1966. They also had residences in New York City and Wickenburg, Ariz. Mr. and Mrs. Seherr-Thoss traveled extensively to such places as Europe, Russia, Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, India, Japan, Africa, Mexico, and Brazil. In 1968, the Smithsonian Institution Press published Design and Color in Islamic Architecture: Afganistan, Iran, Turkey. Written by Mrs. Seherr-Thoss, the photographs were taken by Mr. Seherr-Thoss. Seherr-Thoss's interests varied widely; he designed their houses in Litchfield and Arizona and was an active member of the Litchfield community.
