Biography

Dr. Josiah Gale Beckwith was born September 14, 1803, at Standford, N. Y., graduated from Union College, and studied medicine at the Albany Medical College. He settled in Litchfield, Conn., in 1829 and died there March 21, 1871. He was a successful practitioner, officer of the state medical society, nominated for governor, and was elected to the State Legislature several times. Dr. Beckwith operated a drug store, invested in a variety of business interests, and served as an officer of several prominent local institutions, including terms as president of the Phoenix Bank and Litchfield Mutual Fire Insurance Co. He married Jane Maria Seymour (Mar. 8, 1811-Aug. 13, 1868) on February 1st, 1831 and they had five children. She was a daughter of Moses Seymour Jr. of Litchfield.
