Biography

Samuel Shepard was born in Chatham, Connecticut on Nov. 19, 1772. He taught a district school at the age of 14 and attended Yale in 1793 where he delivered the Salutatory Oration at graduation. He studied theology and preached in Lenox, Mass. where he died on January 5, 1846

A letter to Misses Martha Ellsworth, Polly Ellsworth and Nancy Strong in Chatham. Dated Yale College, March 4th 1793. Mr. Shepard writes about missing friends, the noise of the town, his health, and that he has little time to write letters.
