Biography

Estella Feindel Hewitt was born 17 May 1893 in Lowell, Massachusetts. She was the first woman graduate of the Lowell Textile Institute. She married Philemon J. Hewitt, Sr with whom she had two sons and three daughters. She was a librarian at both the Gilbert Library in Northfield and the Oliver Wolcott Library in Litchfield. She belonged to the Episcopal Church and was the organist for both the Northfield Congregational Church and the Trinity Episcopal Church in Thomaston. She died in June 1979.

Abstract

Seven diaries kept by Estella Hewitt from 1946-1973 documenting daily activities including cooking, cleaning, baking, social activities, playing organ at churches, and working at the Gilbert and Oliver Wolcott libraries. While the other volumes document daily life in Litchfield, the 1962 diary is a trip diary detailing a trip to England, France, Italy Holland, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.
