Content Description

16th Regiment Orderly Book (2011-88-0) is a collection of orders for the 16<emph render='super'>th</emph> Regiment of the Connecticut State Infantry. In the front of the book are three loose items. One item is a Regimental Order from Col. Joseph Birge Jr. and William E. Dickinson (Birge’s Adjutant) to Ezra H. Churchill. Folded with this order is a slip of the enrolled men of the regiment from October 10<emph render='super'>th</emph>, 1843, but this form does not seem to be filled out complete; the number of men is not actually noted. Then there is a second Regimental Order from Dickinson. The actual Orderly Book mainly contains orders for the regiment to assemble for mainly inspection, exercises, and drills. There are also some charts either for organizing the number of men or there supplies. For example, there are a few charts which list the names of everyone in the regiment on one axis and one the other lists supplies such as swords, muskets, bayonet, cartridges, fife, etc and then it is noted how many of each item each person had and then the numbers are totaled at the bottom of the page.
