Series 1 - Correspondence Scope & Contents

Series 1 - Correspondence (1916-1935) - Thirteen Files contain 103 notes and letters including letters with enclosures.

File numbers 1,2,4,6,8,9 11, and 13 contain 94 letters from John Edward Masefield (1878-1976) to Dorothy Bull and (one letter) to her oldest brother, Frederick Kingsbury Bull, after her death in 1934. Nearly all Masefield letters written to Bull before the end of 1920 were dated, written on stationary, and lengthy. However, the collection contains no letters from Masefield to Dorothy Bull in 1921. Further all Masefield letters to Bull during or after 1922 are brief, undated and on blank paper not stationary.

File numbers 3,5,7,and 10 contain seven letters. Bull wrote her Aunt Edith Kingsbury twice while touring England in 1922 and (again in) 1923. The remaining five letters are loosely grouped 'thank you notes' written by: --R.C. Lehmann, retired editor of Punch magazine; and, --Robert Nichols, English poet and WWI veteran; and, --Constance Masefield (1867-1960, wife of John Masefield, younger sister of reknowned Astronomer Andrew Claude de la Cherois Crommelin).

File No. 12 contains an address given by Rev. William J. Brewster at St. Michael's Church in Litchfield on September 15, 1934, after Bull's death on September 1st.

For poetry penned by Dorothy Bull and published in her or in , see within this collection.

For photographs, including a family portrait of Dorothy Bull, two photos of John Masefield, and photo/postcards sent to Bull by Masefield, see within this collection.
