Balance Book, 1821
Item 11
Scope and Contents
Balance book dated 1 November 1821 containing an alphabetical listing by last name of debtors including page numbers (presumably of a corresponding ledger) and amounts due. Nine men are listed under the letter "N" in a section labeled "Negroes." Unlike earlier volumes, their complete names are given. They are Javon Wellson, Nicholas Taylor, Jordan Liberty, Joel Zetus, Joseph Cannan, Ned Strong, Tobias Lanson, Abraham Pranklin, and Cato Readwell. Several other lists follow this one, including "Balances due E Boardman's Notes;" "Notes taken by E. Boardman on Spring Summer 1822;" "Foreign Notes Due to E. Boardman;" "Notes received in the division of notes belonging to the late firm of Boardman and Bennett" and "Notes divided Since 1 Oct 1821 between Boardman and Bennett." One entry of particular note refers to a debt from 1805- "Wolcott, Frederick Land Obligation April 10, 1805" though no amount is listed.
