Hale, Harris M. to Boardman, Cornelia E., 1830-1841
Sub-Series 3.1.1.1.
Scope and Contents
Four letters from Harris M. Hale to Cornelia Boardman. The earliest, dated 13 December 1830, asks Cornelia for "a reply to a question submitted to your consideration when I last had the pleasure of seeing you." Hale notes that he had hoped to accompany her to Baltimore but was disappointed on account of a delay in receiving a letter from Mrs. Schroeder. He mentions his appreciation of her worth and says he hopes to receive her decision in person in Baltimore. In the second letter, dated 11 January 1831, Hale thanks Cornelia for her "kind and frank and friendly epistle" and states that he is replying quickly in order to "disclaim for a single moment any idea of even suspecting you of being a coquet." He notes his error in regards to her feelings and states that “I will never mistake you again” He then flatters himself that “ladies do sometimes change their minds” and hopes that he “might one day reap the reward of patient perseverance.” The other two letters are dated 22 November 1840 and 19 March 1840. The earlier correspondence discusses a visit by Cornelia and includes a postscript written by Sarah M. Lockwood Gill, from whom other correspondence may be found in Folder 13 of this series. The last letter apologizes for circumstances preventing a visit, and requests Cornelia explain the situation to Miss Schroeder, sister to her brother-in-law Frederick.
