Scope and Contents

Three letters signed "Kate" written to Cornelia E. Boardman. The first, dated Rutgers Place, May 17, 1844, notes having returned from the South to find a letter from Cornelia. Kate notes the birth of her niece and requests Cornelia visit soon. She mentions another sister, Louisa, who has a young child in poor health and has been suffering from scarlet fever. Noted finding Mrs. Schroeder and her children looking well. She describes a visit to Baltimore to see Eliza (probably the sister of Cornelia's brother-in-law John Frederick Schroeder). Invites Cornelia to the christening of her niece, Hetty Coolidge Smith. Notes having made the acquaintance of Cornelia's brother George, gives family news, and reports that Julia Hawkes is engaged to be married to a young man of 18.

The second letter is dated September 26, 1845. Kate reports that ottomans will be sent the following day and notes that they have a large family for the week and wish that Cornelia were with there. Gives news of children and reports on a visit from Edward Schroeder and a letter from Eliza which stated Mr. Albert (Eliza’s husband) had been quite sick.

The third letter is dated August 5, 1846. Kate notes that she purchased a dress and hopes it will suit Cornelia. Provides an opinion as to how Cornelia can turn her straw hat into mourning wear. Her sister Hetty will be spending some weeks in Stamford and would like to see Cornelia. Mentions that her brother received a very elegant study chair by the ladies of All Saints Church. Reports having seen Eliza and that Mr. Albert’s health is just a little better.
