Scope and Contents

Cornelia E. Boardman writes to her sister Caroline Schroeder thanking her for her letter, and notes receiving one from Aunt Betsey. She is sorry to hear of their illnesses. Gives Henry’s travel plans noting that he is a homebody and she “cannot move him.” Reports trying to persuade him to go to Washington to see Congress in session. She describes a man injured on the railroad the previous Monday saying he, “lingered in perfect agony being burnt all over except where his book protected him till Friday morning when he died- he was 24 years old.” She laments that his mother would not hear of his being hurt prior to hearing of his death and discusses rumors of his recklessness and that Caroline Nobel’s bridal wreath is exchanged for widow’s mourning. She also notes the death of a railroad worker who was rushed by a baggage car. She discusses her views on God and determination that man must bend to his will and that she wishes Cornelia would be more resigned to his will though her “trials are bitter they are severe.” She also notes that with such misery in the world she feels “that to die is gain.” Reports on domestic activities including making blackberry jelly, and that they will be able to get things from Cousin Frederick as he has opened a druggist and grocery. Discusses various visits and gives advice about ear discharge.
