Scope and Contents

The Marrin Family Papers 2013-110-0, primarily consist of the papers of Oswald Marrin, Jr., but there are also papers from other family members, including his parents, Jean Fyfe Marrin and Oswald Marrin, Sr.  Among the papers of Oswald Marrin, Jr. are his school papers from Center School, Spring Hill School. the Hackley School and Brown University.  There are also papers and correspondence from his years in the Marines during World War II, as well as some business records, newspaper clippings, including his time in political office, and a scrapbook from 1935-37. Oswald Wright Marrin,Jr. was born April 20, 1919 in New York City. Son of Jean Fyfe and Oswald W. Marrin Sr. He moved to Litchfield as an infant and lived there his entire life. He attended the Spring Hill School, Hackley School and graduated from Brown University in 1942. He immediately joined the Marine Corps serving as an infantry officer and Captain on Guadalcanal and two more campaigns on Cape Gloucester in New Britain and one in the Peleliu Islands. He was discharged as a Major in 1946. On his return, he worked at Scovill Manufacturing until 1951. He then took over the Marrin Real Estate company which had been founded by his mother in 1930. He served on the board of Warden and Burgesses from 1951 and was the Borough Warden from 1967 to 1976. He worked to make the center of Litchfield an historic district and to get zoning approved to protect the town's history and architecture. In 1984 he served on the Litchfield Citizen Advisory Committee, which formed the town plan of development. He was a trustee of the Litchfield Historical Society, a member and past president of the Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust and of the Litchfield Country Club, and a member of the Sanctum and charter member of the Rotary Club. He was predeceased by his wife Harriet Hatheway, with whom he had four daughters Harriet Blees Dewey, Judy Fyfe Marrin, Palmer Marrin (Kleeman) and Michele Marrin (Osterman).  Died December 19, 2007.
