Abstract

The Anna Zaremba Thompson papers (2015-13-0) were collected by Bruce Kauffman, who researched women prison wardens and  interviewed Anna Thompson. She was the warden of the Litchfield Correctional Center [Litchfield County Jail] from February 1983 to 1989.

Biographical or Historical Information

Anna Zaremba Thompson was born September 11, 1950 in Hartford, Connecticut to Genevieve and Jan Zaremba. After graduating from Bates College in 1971, she worked for the Connecticut Department of Corrections and in February 1983 was appointed  Warden of the Litchfield Correctional Center. She was the first woman warden of a male prison in the State of Connecticut. In 1983 she received a Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Hartford. In 1990, she moved to the Washington, D.C. area with her husband Lawrence Thompson, who she married in 1982. There she was employed by the National Institute of Corrections to work on a number of projects. Anna Thompson died of lung cancer on March 2, 2005.
