Biographical / Historical

Henry W. De Saussure was a lawyer and Federalist party leader from South Carolina. He served in the Revolutionary War and as the second director of the U.S. Mint. John C. Calhoun, who would later serve numerous federal posts including Vice President, studied in De Saussure's law office following his attendance at Yale College and the Litchfield Law School.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Historical Society purchased the document from an eBay seller located in France. He acquired it as part of a private collection of a French historian.
