Connecticut Light Infantry 17th Regiment Company Books
Collection — Box: 1
Scope and Contents
Connecticut Light Infantry 17th Regiment Company Books collection (1203) is a collection made up of two orderly books. The first book opens with the creation of the regiment detailing its creation by the State of Connecticut which is followed by decisions made by voting on particulars about the regiment (uniform, what the soldiers would have to provide, etc). The book then proceeds to a General Roll which provides the name of every soldier in the regiment and when they joined. This is followed by individual rolls for each year starting with 1793 and ending with 1798. At the ending of the first book are some accounting records for the regiment. The second book contains yearly rolls from 1798 through 1805. Then there are Inspection Returns from 1793 to 1796. These charts provide the name of the members of the regiment at the time and the equipment that they had (drums, fife, bayonet, cartridges, etc). Mixed in with the Inspection Returns are the Annual Returns which were done yearly (sometimes more than once a year) from Sept. 25th 1793 to September of 1804. These records only provide the number of men in the regiment in each year; the records organize the men by rank so it provides the number of men per each rank. At the conclusion of the second book is a “Return of Officers and Non Commissioned Officers” from Sept. 1804 which lists the officers of the regiment and the date they were commissioned. Currently housed in 3A Box 18.
