Scope and Contents

The Slack Family Papers, 2012-76-0, consist of a photograph of a man, woman and boy in a horese-drawn buggy, a small pencil drawing of a hospital ward with individuals identified, notebook of French lessons, and a book, "Pattee's Handbag Diet Book." Joseph Slack (1824-1897) was born in Derbyshire, England and came to Litchfield in 1848.  He was part owner of a grist mill, then owned a soap and tallow business, and then became an ice dealer.  He married Emily Law of Litchfield in 1856 and they had one son, Daniel, who died in 1884. Daniel married Mary Allen in 1880 and they had a son, Joseph.  After Daniel's death, his widow and son lived with his parents at 170 East Street in Litchfield.  Joseph Slack atteneded the college of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.  These items were found in the attic of 170 East Street. The book and french lessons are located in 3A Box 18.
