The latter purchased items such as boags of coffee, St. Croix and New Orleans sugar, spices, sperm candles, mackeral, pimento, and molasses. Correspondence from Hotchkiss, Towner & Atwater mention the scarcity of molasses and salt, and the beginning of a new City Bank in New Haven.
