Scope and Contents A writ issued by William Pelham, Clerk of the Court, for the punishment of John Thomas, a transient in the Litchfield Jail. He was convicted of burning 2 houses and a mill in Sharon, Conn. The sentence to be carried out by the County Sheriff, is for Thomas to be set upon the gallows with a rope around his neck for one hour, and then to be whipped on his naked body. Lynde Lord, Sheriff, attested on the back of the writ that the punishment had been carried out.

Scope and Contents Writ to the Sheriff of the County of Hartford (Conn.) to collect monies from John Marsh, constable of New Hartford, Litchfield County, Conn. who was tax collector and neglected to make payment of said taxes to the state treasurer. The Sheriff is ordered to take John Marsh to the jail in Litchfield until he pays the Treasurer. Signed by John Lawrence, Treasurer.

Scope and Contents An order by A. Kingsbury, Conn. State Treasurer, issued to the Sheriff of Litchfield County, to seize the money or goods of Nathaniel Smith, who was constable of Litchfield and collector of state taxes of Litchfield in 1796 and has neglected to make payment of the taxes to the State Treasurer. On the back, Lynde Lord, Sheriff for Litchfield County, signs that the order has been executed.

Scope and Contents The Henry Swanson, Jr. collection (1972-58-0) includes Litchfield County writs to the Litchfield County Sheriff for collection of debts or transportation orders to take convicted individuals to Newgate Prison and Work House; a share in the Hawkhurst Hotel issued to George J. Switzer; bill of sale for a 1917 limousine to Howard Bissell; and a 1902 marketing letter for South Farms Inn.

Scope and Contents Information given by Litchfield Selectmen - David Welch, Bezaleel Beebe, Briant Stoddard - concerning the estate of Colborn Barrell, late of Boston, who joined with the British. On the back are expenses for the forfeiture of the estate dated Dec. 1779.  Jedediah Strong's signature is under the names of the Selectmen.

Scope and Contents An order from Isaac Baldwin, Justice of Peace of Litchfield County, to Solomon Marsh, of Litchfield, collector of the ministers rate of Litchfield, to collect the minister's rate due to Rev. Judah Champion. Any person refusing to pay is to be taken to the County jail.
