This Writ (1973-7-18), dated August 5, 1788, is in the hand of Isaac Baldwin, Clerk, ordering the Sheriff of Litchfield County or his deputies or Constables to sell lands and properties of Roger Loomis and Jonah Woodruff to settle a debt they owe Henry Allyn, and to put them in the Litchfield Gaol until they pay Allyn what he was owed. The back of the document indicates that the debt was settled May 7, 1789.

Scope and Contents Tax Writs (1973-41-1 and 1973-41-3) from Connecticut State Treasurer, John Lawrence to various Litchfield County town tax collectors seeking payment for unpaid town taxes.  The writs date from 1776 to 1786, although the majority are from 1783.  There is onw writ from 1788 where the sheriff arrested the tax collector from Hartland, Connecticut and put him in the Litchfield Gaol for failure to pay the town taxes. These writs are a result of many Connecticut towns being in arrears of their tax...

State Treasurer, issued to the Sheriff of Litchfield County, to seize the money or goods of Nathaniel Smith, who was constable of Litchfield and collector of state taxes of Litchfield in 1796 and has neglected to make payment of the taxes to the State Treasurer. On the back, Lynde Lord, Sheriff for Litchfield County, signs that the order has been executed.

This Writ (1993-26-0) is from a lawsuit between James Johnston and Reuben Smith, regarding a debt of $200 pounds.  The document, dated November 19, 1788,  begins with an order to the local constables from the presiding Justice of the Peace, Isaac Pardes, to summon Reuben Smith to appear before the Court of Common Pleas.  It then continues three years later, In Litchfield Superior Court regarding a bond between Johnston and Smith.
